Tunes and Tales of the Sea: History and Songs by The Taproom Growlers

April 23, 2024

Tuesday Night Talk (and performance!)

Tuesday, April 23, free
Special start time: 6 pm – 7:30 pm

Audiences love the centuries-old standards like "Haul Away, Joe", "Blow the Man Down", "South Australia", and many more beloved folk songs, but three of the members have also written several of their own songs, rooted in local history, that ring true in the traditional folk style. Every Taproom Growlers concert features a nod to local history, some long-lost sea songs, and the nostalgia of the glory days of the tall ships and the men who sailed them around the world.

The singing is completely unaccompanied, except by the occasional lilt of a bo'sun's pipe, plenty of handclapping, and bursts of hearty laughter.

The seven members of The Taproom Growlers, though not all Maritimers, are steeped in the traditional songs and stories of seafaring life. Since early 2020 they've been singing their "Songs of the Sea" in pubs throughout the western Annapolis Valley, and at several folk festivals. They’ve performed at the Maritime Museum’s 2023 Tuesday Night Tunes summer series and shared their love of sea songs most recently at our “Sail Away & Play at Sea” March Break 2024!

Growl on!
