Sustainable Ocean Conference: Masters Student Research Presentations

The Master of Marine Management (MMM) Students at Dalhousie University is hosting the 13th annual Sustainable Ocean Conference – Tides of Tomorrow. www.sustoceans.com

As part of their community outreach, they are hosting mini presentations at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Presentations on ocean governance and policy,  and marine conservation in Atlantic Canada will be mediated by Scott Schrempf (MMM Student).

The MMM program is a professional and interdisciplinary degree focusing on applied research projects and required classes in marine and social sciences. Graduate research projects are designed with an emphasis on management and marine planning.

Ireland Moro: Ireland is looking at the management of Atlantic salmon in the Bay of Fundy to examine how the health of a population impacts governance.

Erling Rolseth: Erling is creating a holistic understanding of Canada’s presence, commitments and goals in the arctic to assess gaps and inform future development and safety policy.

Bethany Pohl: Bethany’s research works to advance the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) within marine conservation and explores what Indigenous-led marine conservation and governance could look like for the Peskotomuhkati Nation.

Abby Christopher: Abby’s research examines aquatic ecosystems in the Halifax Harbour to determine the port’s zone of influence and develop of monitoring program to decrease port environmental impacts.

Ruth Riley: Ruth’s research focuses on examining whale conservation in the Gully Marine Protected Area with the development of a new assessment tool to inform management efficacy and to promote a holistic approach.

Tamara Joseph: Tamara’s research utilizes a two-eyed seeing approach to combine Indigenous knowledge with Western data systems through GIS mapping of Indigenous stories.
