The Sister Ships: SS Mont-Blanc and SS Whangape SS Imo and SS Cufic with Joel Zemel

7 pm

Author and historian Joel Zemel will discuss the genesis of SS Mont-Blanc, SS Imo (Runic 1) and their sister ships, SS Whangape & SS Cufic (respectively). Although the storied histories of the two ships involved in the collision that ultimately caused the 1917 explosion in Halifax Harbour are a bit more familiar, the two sister ships have their own colourful backgrounds as well. Plans and surveyors' documents provided by the Lloyd's Register Foundation will also be a part of the evening's presentation.

Joel Zemel resides and works in Halifax. He was awarded the prestigious John Lyman Book Award (U.S.A.) in 2016 in the category of Canadian Marine and Maritime History for his book Scapegoat - an in-depth examination of the numerous legal proceedings following the 1917 Halifax Explosion. He was also the historical and design consultant for Canada Post Corporation's stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion.
