Our special exhibit The Sea in Her Blood features 17 amazing women who are redefining traditional ways of living with the sea, Cheryl Maloney is one of those honoured.
Cheryl will help navigate the history of the Mi’kmaq peoples to the water and land in Mi’kma’ki by focusing on both her legal and political background and as a daughter of a great chief. She will share the experience of her family and the past seven generations and the history of her community and the role of Mi’kmaq women as they launched and grow the resistance to the proposed Alton gas project on the Shubenacadie river. Exploring both political and spiritual connection of the Sipekne’katik district band of Mi’kmaq to the waters and species. She will discuss, treaties, spiritual role of women as Matriarchs and the modern fight of Indigenous women on the water as protectors, rights holders and harvesters.
