The history of Blacks in the military in North American is a wealth of instances of bravery and uncommon valor particularly for what Blacks endured.  Kenneth Fells will highlight some of these stories from the personal to the generic.  Join him for a look at military history from an Africentric perspective by the first Nova Scotian black to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Members of the Second Construction Battalion

LtCol Kenneth M. Fells CD, grew up in African Nova Scotian communities of Greenville & Yarmouth and is a descendent of Black Planters (1759) and Black Loyalists (1798).  A Principal for 24 years, he brought a unique perspective to the school environment by utilizing action research and highlighting the lack of cultural proficiency that contributes to high numbers of disengaged black males. LtCol Fells has been an affiliate board member or past president for BEA, NSABSE, NABSE NCEBC, Military Co-Chair DVMAG & Branch #57 William Hall Royal Canadian Legion.  He remains an advocate of the Canadian Cadet movement and is a level four basketball official. He is presently the Culturally Relevant Pedagogical Mentor/Coach for the South Shore Regional School Board.
