Exploring Spring Under the Water – Microscopic Blooms - Tuesday Night Talk

On land we can easily see spring arrive, as trees become green with new leaves and flowers begin to peek through the dirt. In the ocean, spring comes in a little on the small side. Microscopic phytoplankton ‘bloom’ and create a tiny forest in our coastal waters. Other microscopic organisms respond to this new growth and graze on them. This can include larval fish and lobster. Come and see the amazing microscopic life that explodes in Nova Scotia waters every year and learn how it is essential to supporting all the animals that thrive in our ocean.

Alice Ortmann has been an avid explorer of the underwater world since she began to study the oceans at Simon Fraser University, BC. She obtained her SCUBA certification so she could fully immerse herself in the underwater world. While working on her PhD in Oceanography at the University of British Columbia, she began teaching SCUBA. Alice now researches microbes in the ocean, loves SCUBA, and works with the Nova Scotia Underwater Council to encourage Nova Scotians to explore, conserve and appreciate our underwater world.

Tuesday Night Talks is open to everyone. We offer free admission from 4 pm - 8 pm. Donations to Feed Nova Scotia are welcome.
