Redemption Songs tells the extraordinary story of how one of Bob Marley’s greatest songs was born in Nova Scotia and reveals that the core lyric comes from a speech Marcus Garvey delivered in Sydney, Nova Scotia, in 1937: “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body none but ourselves can free the mind."

To understand why Garvey's time in Nova Scotia inspired the speech that inspired the song, we'll fly through centuries of local history from Mathieu de Costa's 1604 arrival, to the generations of men and women who fought free of slavery and discrimination to seek a new life in Nova Scotia.

And we'll learn what Garvey and Marley meant by mental emancipation - and how it holds the key to seeing us all free.

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940)

A great way to end African Nova Scotian History Month!
