The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is happy to welcome back the Yarmouth Shantymen for our summer concert series. Their rich and hearty acapella renditions are sure to captivate any audience.

The Yarmouth Shantymen formed in 1984 when Eric Ruff, former curator of the Yarmouth County Museum, recruited musical friends to perform traditional sea shanties. Sea Shanties are work songs that helped ships’ crews with their heavy day-to-day drudgery and responsibilities. Sailors had delightful “off watch” songs about the joys of life, romance and hardships of the seafaring life.

Although intended as a one-time presentation, the melodies and rhythms of these work songs from the days of sail and the enjoyment that comes from singing them created a momentum that has propelled the group onwards for the last 30 years.
