The Turtle Grove Project

October 3, 2017

At 7:00pm

Kepe’kek [from the narrows of the great harbour] is a response to the impact of the Halifax Explosion on the Turtle Grove community –100 years later– by five Mi’kmaq youth: Aiden Gillis, Brandy Bernard, Kehisha Wilmot, Sabrina DiMattia, and William Johnson.

In honour of the 100th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion PHOTOPOLIS*, The Halifax Festival of Photography, established the Turtle Grove Project working with Mi’kmaq youth on a photo-based exhibit to present the story of the Turtle Grove community at the time of the Halifax Explosion on Dec 6, 1917.

The year-long Turtle Grove Project has been led by Killa Mitchell-Atencio and Hannah Minzloff, and mentored with support from PHOTOPOLIS board and volunteers.  The youth have actively participated in a series of workshops covering history, archival research, and photography since the Fall of 2016 working toward a collaborative exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Tonight we will share our journey with you.

PHOTOPOLIS is a month-long Festival of Photography, held tri-annually in October, during which virtually every gallery space and alternate venues in Halifax exhibit photo-based work, holding talks and special events to celebrate the role of photography in our community.

This PHOTOPOLIS project has been generously funded by the HRM 100th Anniversary Grant Program.
